What is Coinbase Wallet (formerly Base App)?

Base App, Coinbase's self-custodial app, was renamed back to Coinbase Wallet on September 8, 2026, about 14 months after the original rebrand. The social features were dropped from the pitch, and the app now positions itself as a self-custodial venue for crypto, stocks, commodities, predictions and perps.

Coinbase relaunched its wallet as Base App in July 2025 with social feeds, messaging, payments and trading. Coinbase leadership later acknowledged the social side did not work, and app leadership moved to Jordan Fish before the name reverted.

The current app offers instant cross-chain swaps, candlestick charts, limit orders, perpetual futures powered by Hyperliquid, prediction markets and onchain tokenized stocks. Some markets are geo-restricted, and perps are not offered to US users.

The wallet remains self-custodial: users hold their keys, and Coinbase says scam tokens are detected and hidden automatically. A USDC rewards product (up to 3.35% APY, rate variable) is rolling out in the US for users who link a Coinbase account.

Coinbase describes the app as a test kitchen for assets not yet listed on its centralized exchange. Base remains a core chain, but the app now supports more than 10 networks.

Good fit for

  • Beginners wanting a trusted brand with self-custody
  • Users who want perps and predictions without separate apps

Not ideal for

  • Cost-sensitive high-volume traders
  • Users seeking the social features of the old Base App
